How I Stay Motivated: Good Times & Bad
Share
Introduction: Painting as My Voice
I’ve never been great with words. Often, what I try to express gets misunderstood — but when I paint, my audience understands me perfectly. Through abstract expressionism, I can speak directly to hearts, without a single word. My imperfect brushstrokes reflect the beauty I see in both humanity and nature — because neither is perfect, and that’s exactly what makes them beautiful.
I’m a Melbourne-based Australian landscape artist, originally from India, deeply proud of my roots and culture. My paintings are not just artworks — they’re conversations, stories, and emotions translated onto canvas.
Good Times: When Hearts Connect
For me, the “good times” as an artist are not just about sales or exhibitions — they’re about emotional connection. When a buyer relates to my artwork — whether through memories, emotions, or shared experiences — it feels like magic. Seeing happiness in their eyes reminds me why I create in the first place.
To keep my motivation alive in these moments, I set clear and achievable goals. I look for inspiration everywhere — from a quiet walk by the Yarra River to a spontaneous visit to an art gallery. Immersing myself in new cultures, colours, and landscapes constantly sparks fresh ideas.
Bad Times: When Creativity Feels Distant
Every artist faces moments of self-doubt, rejection, or creative block. I’ve had days where the canvas feels too heavy, where nothing seems to flow. But I’ve learned that setbacks are not roadblocks — they’re lessons.
When things get tough, I remind myself:
-
Failure is a teacher, not an enemy.
-
Consistency is key — I set aside time to create, even if I’m not feeling inspired.
-
Nature always helps me reconnect — even a short walk can clear my mind.
I also lean on my creative community. My sister, Sydney-based artist Anjana Rai, often gives me honest feedback and encouragement. I’m grateful to be part of a network of talented artists across Australia — like Shruti Gupta, Honor Bowden, and Guzalia Xavier — who understand the challenges of the artistic journey.
My Motivation Toolkit
-
Routine: Dedicated time for painting each week.
-
Experimentation: Trying new mediums, techniques, and subjects to keep ideas fresh.
-
Curiosity: Allowing myself to create without pressure or expectation.
-
Community: Surrounding myself with artists who inspire and challenge me.
Final Thoughts
Whether in good times or bad, my motivation comes from a deep love for art, nature, and human connection. I’ve learned that creativity is not a constant flame — it needs tending, fuel, and patience.
